Innate around Dayton, Ohio, Thompson spent much of her childhood around Australia, returning to the United States to pursue an acting & modeling career. Her 1st important film role was in the 1987 film Wall Street. Around 1989 she was cast on the soap opera Falcon Crest and in 1993 on the science fiction television series Babylon 5 as telepath Talia Winters.

Thompson married Babylon Quintet co-star Jerry Doyle in 1995, shortly before allowing a series at a prevent of its 2nd year; it experienced 1 boy, Alec Doyle, however divorced within 1997. Thompson advance to pop up when "Detective Jill Kirkendall" in tercet seasons of crime drama NYPD Blue, leaving inside 2000 to pursue a career within journalism.

When working for sole a year as a newspersin & backup anchor on CBS affiliate KRQE in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Thompson was scouted and hired by CNN and hired as an evening anchor for CNN Headline News in August of 2001. Her 1st words in-screen when anchor were "Hi, I'm Andrea Thompson, and unless you've been living in a cave, you probably already know that."
